Abstract
The Voices from the Sandhills Oral History Project gathers, preserves, and shares oral histories from the Sandhills region, consisting of the southwest corner of North Carolina's Coastal Plain, including Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Richmond, and Scotland Counties.
The Sandhills are a place of physical transition where the coastal plain rises to meet the piney hills. The Sandhills are also a place of cultural transition where the traditional South meets the world in the multi-racial and multi-cultural households of Fort Bragg. The Sandhills afford the rare opportunity for interviews to not just freeze a moment in time but to chart changes taking place in the community and larger society. This project focuses on those transitions, the transition from peace to war, from immigrant to American, and from persecuted minority to equal partner in society.
